There are many different kinds of moves that you could learn for the martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The fact of the matter is that it can be a pretty complicated martial art if you wish to go through the rabbit hole. But there are still some basic moves that you can learn in order to improve your game, no matter who you are. One of the most basic classes of moves in BJJ are the chokes – these are submissions that you can use to put your opponent to sleep. That being said – below you will find a list of the top 5 best GI Jiu Jitsu Chokes.
5 GI Jiu Jitsu Chokes you Should Learn
Cross collar choke
This is one of the most basic chokes in the entire arsenal of BJJ. You can do it from the mount position and from the full-guard, among others. You will need to grab your opponent’s collars with both of your palms – but at the opposite side. This will form the base of the choke. Then you need to minimize the space between your elbows and your opponent’s neck – and then use your palms to pull your opponent near you. This will choke him out.
Bow and arrow choke
This is a very high-percentage move that you can implement in your BJJ game. You can do this move rather easily if you have your opponent’s back. Once again, like in the basic choke from the back – you need to grab your opponent’s opposite collar with one of your hands.
Then you rotate to the side and grab his GI at the area around the knee. Use raw strength to pull on the collar of your opponent’s neck and choke him out – the pressure is unbearable. Again, if you wish to defend this move – don’t even think of letting your opponent touch your collars if he has your back.
Loop Choke
You can do this move effectively from open guard. First, you grab your opponent’s opposite collar with one of your hands. You need to destabilize your crouched opponent by pushing one of his legs with your opposite leg – this will make him lose balance and drop his head. You use this moment to wrap your arm around your opponent’s head and then pull him with full pressure in side control. This will give you the chance to choke him out – though you need be careful, as if you fail, you will be left in an unfavorable position.
Baseball choke
This choke is a very popular choice for BJJ practitioners. If you can learn how to perform it properly – then you will find out that it can be a devastating move. The reason why this move is named “baseball choke” is due to the fact that you will need to place your hands like you’re holding a baseball bat.
This move can be made from different positions, including the bottom full-guard. However, it’s arguably easiest to do it from the mount. You place one of your hands with the palm up deep into the collar near your opponent’s neck, on the opposite side. Then place your other hand, palm-down, to the other collar. You then squeeze your arms together so as to create as much pressure as possible – choking your opponent out.
Papercut choke
If you’re in side-control on top of your opponent, then there is another sneaky choke that you could try and perform. From side-control, you need to grab the back of your opponent’s collar, right behind his neck. Then, with the other arm, you need to grab the opposite collar. All that remains for you to do is to rotate to the side of your opponent’s head – this will create enough pressure to choke him out.
